Best day programs

I am currently researching different day programs for my adult daughter. She needs a place that is supportive but also encourages her to be as independent as possible. I keep seeing different links but I want to know which ones are actually worth looking into. What are the main things you look for when checking out a website or a facility? I want to make sure the environment is positive and that the staff actually enjoys their jobs. Any advice?

Choosing a day program is a big decision and it is smart to do your homework. I usually look at the variety of services they offer and how long they have been around. You can check out how they provide social skills training for adults with intellectual disabilities www.gccnyc.org/what-we-offer to see the kind of stuff they offer. We chose them because they have a really wide range of options from day hab to community outreach. The website gives a good overview but seeing it in person is even better. The atmosphere there is always very upbeat and the staff seems genuinely invested in everyone's progress. I like that they don't just stay in one building all day long. They make an effort to get people out into the community which is huge for building social skills. My daughter has made some really close friends there and her confidence has shot through the roof. It is such a relief to know she is in a place where she is respected and supported every day. Definitely worth a look if you want something high quality.
